What is Thanks Giving all about?

Q: Why do Americans celebrate thanks giving - what is the reason behind it - what is the tradition on this day? Do you get the day off work? What do you eat traditionally on this day? mmmm sounds yummy!! Sounds a bit like Christmans dinner - in the UK we traditionally have: Roast Turkey or Goose, Roast potatoes, Brussell Sprouts with butter and chestnuts, Roasted Carrotts with Thyme, Stuffing (typically Sage & Onion flavour), Cranberry Sauce, Mini Sausages wrapped in Streaky Bacon, Cauliflour & Broccoli Cheese, Pickled Onions, Yorkshire Puddings and Gravy! Yummy!! Do Americans prefer Christmas or Thanks giving? - Do u get presents on Thanks giving? Sorry i forgot to mention Christmas Pudding with Brandy Cream etc! How could I forget?!

A: Thanksgiving was first decreed a holiday by Abraham Lincoln around the time of the Civil War as a way of reflecting on what God has given us and how blessed we are to have this country. It was reinstated in the 20th century, and since then is a way to sit down with loved ones toward the end of the year and count your blessings. Most schools (Universities too) give the week off starting that Wednesday (Thanksgiving is Thursday) and going through the weekend. Except for retail stores, almost all workplaces are closed. Traditional food includes Turkey of course, mashed potatoes, possibly ham, green beans, cranberry sauce, etc., but all families have their own traditions. For example, some people have taken to Deep Frying their turkeys.
