Why are some holidays considered holidays?

Q: i don't get it. yes it's a day off but some or most are just ridiculous. i think the most ridiculous of them all is new years eve and new years. most stores don't even open on those days and for what?! ooh because it's the first of january, big deal. columbus day is another holiday. someone who thought he discovered something but screwed up and thanksgiving. people celebrate thanksgiving for giving thanks. does anyone know what those europeans did to those native americans? took their land, pretended to like them and killed them off. another is labor day, all these holidays you can get off work why do you need this one? its crazy. My final one is memorial day do you really need to miss a day off your job or school just to keep in memory of the soldiers who died? you can do that any other day. not being harsh but you can and you know it. we're fighting that country for all the wrong reasons anyway i feel. i have plenty but i don't want to make this an essay but i made my point. don't get too offended. it's just one person's voice.

A: i agree with you when it comes to Columbus day. are family don't think of Thanksgiving, like most of the world does. my family and i celebrate Thanksgiving as being thankful for what we have accomplished or just an excuse to cook, get fat and drunk. i personally like having all the days of from school. one thing that your forgetting is that not everyone feels the same way you do about those holidays you names. most people use the holidays as an excuse to see family, spend money and get fat. memorial day is one of the reasons we have freedom of speech so, be thankful that YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SPEAK SO FREELY.
