Q: We dont really celebrate Thanksgiving. I dont know if its just an American tradition or not I am from Mexico City I came here to Texas when i was about 7yrs old. Uhmm can you tell me what Thanksgiving is all about? i mean i know you thank people and have a family dinner. But we dont really do that like we get invited to other Thanksgiving parties and we dont do anything here at home. We do celebrate X-mas big. Is Thanksgiving Day as big as Xmas???

A: You have lived in the US since you were 7 and STILL have not accepted the AMERICAN traditions? That's rather sad because how can you be a citizen of a country ANY COUNTRY without partaking in it's traditions and holidays... is it normal for people to come to this country and just celebrate their FORMER COUNTRY'S holidays and traditions???? If you LIVE HERE, you SHOULD be celebrating AMERICAN TRADITIONS.... after all, didn't you MOVE here to BE AMERICAN???? Ok that rant over with---Thanksgiving started because of the first people from Europe to settle in this country..(The Pilgrams)... who came here to escape religious persecution from England. Once they arrived, they really didn't know ANYTHING abotu the land or how to grow crops or how to survive. It is said that native Americans (Indians as they were called) helped the pilgrams when they got here and for THAT, the pilgrims gave thanks supposedly by creating a huge feast of wild turkey and the crops that the Indians taught them to grow---vegetables)... it is that FEAST and togetherness that TRUE AMERICANS celebrate today....with the turkey and dressing and all the fixings and Pies for dessert.......Canada ALSO has a "Thanksgiving" but their day is in late October rather then Late November.... In MANY ways, Thanksgiving is AS BIG if not BIGGER then Christmas.... it is the time when MOST people TRY every year to get back HOME to family... More people travel for the Thanksgiving holiday then for Christmas....
