Why did the first pilgrims eat turkey for thanksgiving and why is that the main dish in celebrations today?

Q: is there a significant explanation or importance?

A: The significance of the first Thanksgiving was to celebrate a bountiful fall harvest and having plenty of food to eat, after nearly all starving and freezing to death their first winter here. Any turkeys they would eaten would have been wild turkeys. They also were introduced to many corn dishes by the Indians.
