A: In perhaps a strange way, it is more appropriate that it is not an official holiday. Much of how it is now was to draw attention to the lack of recognition that Irish immigrants received for their heroism and contributions. Many had been scattered around the world during a time of great famine and were looked down upon by locals. They rallied around a religious holiday to display all that is Irish. Today that has become a world wide celebration of identity and acceptance in many countries and various cultures. It would get my vote. However I do believe that more people would rather have the day after off - lol
