Why did my Grandfather (who was Swedish) make my mother wear orange on St.Patrick's day? In the 50's and 60's

Q: She still hates St.Patrick's Day,she always got pinched so much.

A: Orange represents the Irish Protestants. They wear orange on St. Patrick's Day in protest to the Catholics. The green symbolizes the Catholic Irish, while Orange represents the Protestant Irish. Although Green, has become a "national" color, so the Protestants wear Orange to remind the world that Ireland is more than just Catholic. The Dutch also wear orange to kind of offend the Irish because they don't really like each other.
