Since this is America, and most of us are Americans, why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Q: i could understand if this was ireland, but it's not. and i don't care what anybody says. there is no such thing as "irish-american". if you were born in america, you are american. irish is not a race. just, because you're great great great ancestors came from there, that doesn't make you irish. and if you're honest, you will admit that you could care less that it has to do with ireland, and that you just celebrate it, because it's another holiday in america. everyday that you're alive, you don't think twice about ireland. be realistic. there's no "irish" checkmark spot under race.

A: im irish (100%) lol ill admtt it does annoy me when americans claim to be irish....and go too far with it its a day for irish people to celebrate being irish, because we a truly proud nation as a whole (this is only my opinion) but a lot of americans like to claim "irishness" because it gives them some individuality or something? american view of ireland is waaay overated. They have a very biased view of our whole way of life...i think a lot see it as "old-fashioned" and "cultural" and they like to think they have some part in that its ok to americans to have fun on paddys day (because why the hell not?)....but i think it has very little to do with THEIR personal identity.....its our tradition! obviously its a day to drink (and whatnot) here in Ireland...but i think moreso in america its just a reason to party for me, and my family/friends....we do celebrate the fact that we are irish...but i was born and bred here so i can if i want lol youre harsh lol....but i guess i agree with you, it refreshing for an american to think a little "outside the US box" ;D
