A: St. Patrick's Day is a Catholic holiday that always falls during the Christian season of Lent. Basically, it is one day for people to do whatever they were focused on not doing for Lent. For many people, what they chose not to do was drink. That is why they have a lot to drink on March 17. Other people thought that having tons to drink on a set day of the year was a great idea (skipping Lent was similarly a great idea). This created a tradition with misunderstood origins. It is for precisely this reason that many people partake in wild parties without observing the discipline of Lent. (Personally, I like experiencing Lent, but I've never celebrated St. Patrick's Day!)
