Why is it customary to eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day?

Q:

A: The Irish were very poor with little to eat. Corned beef and cabbage was considered cheap food just thrown together to fill their stomachs. There's more to this of course, but it became a tradition to eat it on St. Patrick's Day.
