is music forbidden in islam?

Q: i confronted fundies about the ban of music but they quickly changed their stance on music and said its allowed as they dont have any good reason to support this .as far as i know music is banned in islam and most islamic scholars say so. so is music forbidden in islam or not? edit: yes i luv music especially rap

A: Prophet Mohammad SAW did not forbid music completely. At a wedding occasion when girls were singing a song and playing a hand held drum called DAF stopped when they saw Prophet coming. He came and said, don't stop singing and playing DAF and they started singing and playing DAF again. But we also know that he said for those who involve totally in music all the time, a waste of time. Perhaps because it was time to learn about defending themselves in wars that were being waged upon them by the enemies of Islam - the idolators. We know very few become so good in music that they make living but most of them waste all their lives and stay poor. To raise a family it is not a good profession to get into. Based on his permission to play DAF at one occasion, some scholars has written that Muslim can only play DAF. Making a general statement on one example of Prophet is not a good basis to prohibit all kinds of music. If Arabs had many more musical instruments at the occasion, Prophet may have allowed to play them also because of the happy occasion. Based on one permission and one hadith saying music makes people lazy, scholars discourage music. One scholar of Quranb whom I respect a lot says that a light music that sooths and relaxes our soul is OK to listen but western music that makes too much loud noise is certainly not relaxing but rather is more exciting kto our nerves and causes young people to shout, scream and do wild things. Such music is certainly is bad and doen't teaches a good moral behaviour. We see majority of musicians are involved in marijuana and drugs and ultimately destroy their minds and bodies. Certainly I don't see any thing good in it. They are bad roll models. To look themselves unique and most boys interested in music lengthen their hair, wear weird clothes, chains and rings in their ears and noses certainly promote to make others look themselves different than all normal people. I don't see any thing good in it.
