When does Ramadan start?

Q: I live in Southern California...

A: Well, depends you see...the various masajid in SoCal have been starting and stopping on different days for years. Just another indication of just how unified we are, right? Anyway, some follow first sighting worldwide. Some follow regional sightings. Some use the calculation method. Ramdhan starts with the sighting and ends with the sighting; it may be 30 days or as few as 28. That's why you're getting Monday or Tuesday. I just wonder if the Prophet, AS, was alive today, and he lived in Madinah Munawarah, and he started Ramadhan on the 1st, would the world follow him, or would they follow North America's sighting, or would they still calculate? Answer my question and you will have the key.
