Is canola oil kosher for passover?

Q: we got butter with canola oil. what is this oil? is there corn in it ?

A: Canola oil is definitely NOT Kosher for Passover. Canola oil is a type of rapeseed oil developed in the 1970's, so it definitely was not a food known in the days of Moses. It is also made from a grain close to one of the five kitniyot, (see links below) rendering it not usable for Passover. We keep strict Kosher, and I can tell you with certainty that at our local Kosher grocery store, there were NO products containing canola oil after the store (The Butcherie in Brookline) went Kosher for Passover. My daughter is allergic to peanuts and nuts, so I have to scrutinize every package. A couple years ago I noticed canola wasn't being used so I asked my rabbi about it, who confirmed it isn't pesadik.
