A: Its the captalits response to May Day. May Day is a Eurpean holiday, which was huge during the cold war. Soviets and allied nations would parade their armies in celebration of the worker. Made no sense. The response was to have a holiday at the other end of the season, in support of the American worker -- Labor Day. Its to honor the average worker in the U.S. Looks like I was a bit wrong chronologically. See below.
