A: The 13 British colonies broke away from Great Britain and became 13 free and independent states or 13 countries, on 4 July 1776. The 13 countries formed a confederation but it was not a single country yet. The United States of America began as an autonomous sovereign or country on 4 March 1789, after the U.S. Constitution became active. There are currently 56 political divisions (50 states, District of Columbia, and five territories).
