Why is the day named

Q: I find this very ironic, all things considered.

A: If it was simply July 4th, then we would think of it only as a date, not a special event in time. So most likely they called it." The Fourth of July" to signify its importance as a historical day for our country!! To answer the person who first answered you.... England would definitely NOT celebrate this holiday because it refers to America's independence from England in 1776!!
