what were the economic conditions of india before independence ?

Q: i want to know the conditions in which the indians were living & in differrent fields - style of living, agriculture, education, and many more..

A: Before independence the economy of India was under sables. The economy was largely agrarian & more then 80% of the population was engaged in agriculture. The yield per acre was low & there was a persistent threat of drought & flood.there was no efficient canal & irrigation facility. The soil due to non replenishment lost its fertility & the food production was stagnant or was falling. There was no industry to manufacture goods only the textile industry faced the highly competitive goods & industry manufactured goods from England. In the name of service sector there was no banks or insurance. there was no product innovation & the science & technology was stagnant. Education was largely westernized & was filed with western philosophy & culture & ideas. But the good things about the education was that they introduced English to India & some glorified western philosophies of democracy, socialism, fraternity & to think & challenge the old believe 7 to think scientifically. But the Indian values culture & history was largely neglected. It can be rightly said that the education system was aimed at producing good clerks & tax collector for their Raj to continue & efficiently control the administration. They society was clearly divided into 2 clearly divisible groups & the center of adminstration & wealth were British officials & the deceased maharajahs who had conceded theirs provinces to the Britishers & the the poor Indians who had to pay higher taxes.
