Was it wrong of me to tell my boss I couldn't work July 4th?

Q: I applied in early june and i had my interview, i go the job but it took them a week to do the background check. so after that week i went back in and filled out my tax forms. Then a week after that I finally got my orientation. So after that I went into get my schedule for my training. My boss had me working July 4th so I said I couldn't. It is one of my training days, but after a while he jjust said assume your off. I know I should have told him earlier but I didn't know the procedures and I wasn't think of July 4th on June 10th-14ish. I think that he should of asked me if I could. But I was just looking for input. Thanks in advance.
