The 4th of July is a national holiday to recognize the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Many people consider it the "birthday" of the country, though of course there are many other important days in US history. Traditionally, it is a day to show off your patriotism and celebrate our nation, but it's also (for many people) a paid holiday from work and school that falls during prime vacation time and is marked by sales, so it's a great time to go to outdoor parties and have firework displays even if you (for whatever reason) don't feel like celebrating the US.
