To the jews: I have been invited to celebrate hanukkah with my friends family and i am not Jewish, any advice?

Q: i am very excited!

A: Well, don't get too excited yet. Channukah falls around Christmas time! And don't be worried at all. This is the holiday that best highlights our main Jewish belief - eat lots of food. :) Joking! But really, come with an empty stomach, because there should be lots to eat. There aren't really many prayers, just the lighting of the Channukiah (the 9-branched candle holder you see in Jewish homes). Channukah is 8 nights, and each night we light as many candles as corresponds with the night of the holiday. The family will use 1 candle to light all the others, say a few blessings, and then probably sing some songs. There are lots and lots of Channukah songs (zmeerot, in Hebrew). Some are in English, some are in Hebrew. Also, depending on the family, it might be their custom to tell the story of Channukah. But it's a good story. Also, Channukah is a gift-giving holiday, so I would be sure to bring something for your host. You might get something too! A couple other things you might see are chocolate Channukah coins for the kids, potato pancakes (called latkas, they're REALLY good), and a game with a spinning top called a draydel. Just relax and have fun!
