During Hanukkah, on the friday do you light both the Menorah and the Shabbat candles or just the Menorah?

Q: This is probably a really dumb question, but please keep in mind that I'm still in the process of converting so I don't know all the details yet. I heard that the lighting of the Menorah "replaces" the Shabbat candles on the friday during Hanukkah but I just want to make sure. (and yes.. I'm way in advance asking that question. ) Thanks!

A: Not a dumb question at all! The menorah does not in any way replace lighting Shabbat candles. You light both. Light the menorah first, because once you light Shabbat candles and accept the Sabbath has arrived, you are no longer able to kindle another flame. So - say the blessing and then light the proper number of candles on the menorah. Then light your Shabbat candles and say the blessing over them (in that order). You can use the shamash from the menorah to light the Shabbat candles, but it is not required. One fun fact about Shabbat candles vs. Chanukah candles - you are allowed to read by the light of Shabbat candles, if there is no other light in the room. But Chanukah candles can not be used as a source of light, even on the Sabbath - they are specifically to commemorate the miracle, and not for use. Good luck with your conversion!
