When did Halloween start in the US?

Q: Just wondering when halloween start in the US?

A: It started in the USA when it was brought across by immigrants from the British Isles, but no-one knows exactly when. Hallowe'en is based on an ancient Christian festival started over 1000 years ago in Rome. E'en is short for Evening or Eve. Hallow means Holy or Saint. It used to be called "All Hallows Eve" and was the Eve of the feast of All Saints (Nov 1st). In the USA it became secularised because the mainly protestant immigrants did not approve of the Catholic idea of Saints. Hence they did not celebrate the religious feast decrying it as wicked, even pagan. This just left the folk customs which had grown up around the eve of the feast - dressing up as Saints and Devils, playing tricks on people, lighting lanterns to welcome the Saints. This ignorance of the celebration's Christian origins has lead to lots of nonsense about supposed pagan origins, Celtic "days of the dead" and the like. None of this is based on any real historicla evidence.
