Why did people choose December 25th to celebrate the birth of christ if he wasn't even born anywhere near then

Q: or was he?

A: One thing that Christianity did was adapt itself to the culture of its people. Most pagan societies had some sort of celebration on or near the winter solstace. No one really knew the true birthday of Christ so December 25th was the date selected to celebrate his birthday. The date is not important the celebration is.
