Do think Christmas might as well be a fake holiday?

Q: I think X-mas has become overworked and commercial. It's all about the presents and what not. I'm 13. i know that, santa is not real. i never believed in him. I am Christian, and i believe that a true Christian shouldn't celebrate the fake holiday. It was made up. Jesus Christ doesn't need a made up birthday that is just used for greedy kids that aren't thankful. Thats my opinion. what's yours? =)

A: ALL holidays, feast, festivals, celebrations, whatever, are made up. They are created by people to celebrate or to remember things which are significant to them. The coming of Christ - his birth - was a significant event for people. It is recorded in the bible as being marked by angels singing in the heavens. Because of its great significance to Christians, they decided to have a day where they commemorated this momentous event. They tried to guess at the actual date and settled on 25th December - they probably did not get it right, but they tried and we cannot do any better. The over-working and commercialisation of Christmas is unfortunate but you can't stop it happening out there. You do, however, have some control over what you make of it. You do not have to be greedy - you can choose not to give or receive presents or you can give gifts to charities on others behalf. You can join in church celebrations (which are not commercial). Christmas is what YOU make of it. PS the Christmas tree etc are not pagan. They are customs which Christians have developed over the last 1700 years or so.
