A: The tree is traditional with that holiday dating back to the Roman/Christian merging of their holiday and the "new" holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The Romans had feasts for that time of year and one of the ways they paid homage to their god was an evergreen tree that represented fertility and prosperity. So, it kinda just got carried into the Christmas holiday.
